Now here’s a thing. I have been so busy in the garden that I’ve been neglecting the ‘house’ blog but books are always the first thing I turn to when I want something to feel more home-like, so here I am back with a new Kent writer for you.

Jane Ayres had her first short story published in a UK pony magazine at the age of 14. Since then, she’s published internationally, wait for it, THIRTY books for children and teenagers, plus hundreds of short stories (including award winners), comic strips, poems and articles. Her work has also been translated into 8 languages.

Phew. But there’s more…

A supporter of animal charities, Jane’s recent titles for e-readers are the Matty Horse and Pony Adventures, with author royalties being donated to Redwings Horse Sanctuary, and COMING HOME, an emotional story of the journey of two Norwegian Forest cats, with royalties going to Cats Protection.

Thanks Jane, for finding the time to come on here, and here are Jane’s FIVE SENTENCES:

When you were small, you wanted to … be a mounted policewoman. Or a psychiatric nurse.  Or missionary.  Or a writer.

The one thing you can never resist is … chocolate.  Especially if it’s dark and sprinkled over an Irish Coffee Cheesecake. Or in a hot mocha with whipped cream.  Or a chilled chocolate and raspberry mousse.

You may not say it aloud but… I really dislike the word “awesome.”

The last time you went ‘WOOP’ with excitement was … When I saw a stunning green woodpecker on a grassy knoll yesterday.  Beautiful.

Your five favourite words are …. Tenacity.  Affinity.  Chosen.  Melisma. Absinthe. Fisticuffs. Magenta. Eternity.

Oh dear, that’s 8 words.  Five words is just too few. I love the sounds and patterns of words, their textures and imagery.  And power.

Some words, however, can be spoiled by inappropriate use.  A word such as  Robust.  (Politicians, you know who you are!)

And I asked Jane if she had a favourite writing place

I don’t have a favourite place. I used to balance my laptop on my knee on the sofa but have now returned to working at a proper desk, which is a lot more productive and healthier.

A book or a writer you would recommend?

I raved on Goodreads about Sarah Waters, The Little Stranger and am also enjoying Gary Shteyngart, Super Sad True Love Story

little stranger

Thanks Jane. A lovely guest (even if you flagrantly added more words to your pile…!) And LOOK… here’s a box of chocolate absinthe for you as a going home present. They are aw…. nope, I can’t do it! Just enjoy. x
